35: Summer Blues

Over a month since my last update? I'm ashamed of myself! Although...my art has been sadly lacking lately, and it's been amazingly frustrating. Here are some recent scribblings in any case.

Silly requests from my tween-aged sister and her friend. Bling giraffes. :|

Marker experiement with one of my Insuti guys.

The One Who Cannot Concentrate on Baseball Games. In all seriousness, I'm loving the various stances of the pitchers.

Something from this year's Artslam which I quite like. Artslam is a Livejournal-centric drawing challenge focusing on world and idea building, and I partake every year. Here's last year's blog post on my Artslam work! This year, I'm out of my comfort zone as I'm not focusing on my Insuti world OR animal people, and it SHOWS with some of the drivel I've drawn thus far. Hopefully I'll uh...loosen up.

I will draw Pokemon until the day I die.

33: Erf...

Had a rough week- one of my flash drives died on me and I lost quite a bit of work. Nothing I can't recover from, but it was a huge blow to morale nonetheless! Have some extremely quick gestures from my commercial figure drawing class...we're basically wandering around the city for three hours creeping on people. Not a terrible assignment. ;]

First three were drawn from the second level of a city market, and the last image is from a city park where people happened to be having break dancing sessions.

32: Super Rag-tag Post

Two WIPs/color mocks for my final project in McKissick's Electronic Illustration class. In short, I'm illustrating a few images of Leshy, a mischievous Slavic woodland spirit...the finals and preliminaries will get their own blog post in due time. :]

A few experiments with ink application from figure drawing.

A commission and media experiment- who could pass up the chance to draw a flamingo in a fedora? India ink, colored pencil, and watercolor.

Iconography for my Design for Illustration class with Walter King, created in Illustrator.

Some bus-scribbles related to re-reading Pullman's 'His Dark Materials'. These are Mulefa, creatures with a diamond-shaped limb structure. The wheels/seedpods they use for transportation are pictured incorrectly here- they're supposed to be more like this. Ah well, at least I got the body structure mostly figured out.

In closing, a cute little 'yote for you!

25: Oops

Well. All of this stuff is from the end of last semester, but I completely forgot to post it. Forgot I drew all of this, even. Didn't realize I had lost THAT much sleep.

Some weird thing for digital illustration class.

Studies from my last class with Mr. Pirasteh! Charcoal on toned paper.

Later this week I'll spam the blog with face studies and things.

22: Black and what

I've felt pretty stressed recently; school's finally getting to me, I guess. Hopefully my next post will have a little color...and perhaps an abundance of obnoxiously cute cartoon dogs. Evidently, I hate myself, because I want to doodle custom watercolor Christmas cards for most of my family. :[ In the meantime, here's a few assignments from my Illustration Methods sketchbook...

A ballpoint pen cloth study and Rita's face in charcoal.

Some hands of mine. I'm proud of the one on the left!

"Weird Raider 1", an assignment for my Design for Illustration class. The objective was to move value through the composition. This composition is made up of things I found around my room, which accounts for the nonsensical...nonsense. Gaaad I cannot talk I am GOING BACK TO BED. But first, a detail shot to show off my hatching! Media: Acrylic and colored pencil, 11x17 inches, watercolor board

21: Scribbledump

Had to toss something up here before disappearing for turkey break! Here's scribbles and blather from the past few weeks. They're in no particular order, but the derpier the hands are, the more recent the scribble probably is. School's sapping my brains, you see.

Dynamic dinoguys! The most fun thing to draw.

From those long bus rides to friends' apartments...

Gonna turn this into a watercolor painting for an online buddy. c:

These two pages are compilations from my planner. I really need to get into drawing my Insuti guys more often; I miss them.

17: Figure Drawing Post

Black and white charcoal on toned paper, maybe two hours. This model was a ROCK. I don't think she moved for an hour at a time. Also, her hair: smiles for ever

Charcoal on watercolor paper, hour and a half or so. This is such a good medium for observational studies!

The following are various gestures, usually under ten, if not fifteen minutes. Pirasteh teaches us many different approaches to drawing, which I'm enjoying quite a lot. I feel like I'm improving...I just need to quit halfassing the feet, hah.

14: Schoolin' Once More

My second finished project for Illustration methods class, "Lammerguyer", 9x12 in acrylics on illustration board. The assignment was to create a human-animal hybrid (hehe) and use good lighting reference to make it look realistic. I based mine on a lammergeier, or bearded vulture. There are things I did decently and things I did flat out incorrectly in this piece, but I consider it my first successful acrylic painting! Here's the graphite value study I did beforehand.

The school gave us these cute little planners with toned paper covers. More of my dragonbeastie!

My figure drawing instructor had us use charcoal on watercolor paper for an hour-long exercise. Definitely going to try this more often...In real life, you can see the awful smudgy grays created when badly using white and black charcoal together, and I plan to be more attentive next time.

11: Pre-Sophomore, la de da

Quickly colored half-angel man.

This is what goes on in my sketchbook.

Digital still life attempt...something or other. Corel Painter.

The two siblings of my personal mythology. I'm thinking of expanding their family tree a little in the near future. Nothing but a vignette today, but I like how this turned out, being a small doodle and all.

Fanart: Good for the soul. These were also gifts to my little sister, who watched the first two seasons of Avatar with me.

A friend suggested I draw a cockatrice/basilisk during a live streaming session, and it turned out decently! Hopped like mad between photoshop and painter for this guy.

Another portrait of Nopu standin'...trying to get a handle on this inking/watercoloring style so I can use it for quick commissions to pay for internet accessimeanfood.

On a more serious note...I need to re-learn how to draw people, as I've come to realize that I dislike how it 'feels' to draw them (when I'm not drawing my angel things and insuti people). Just recently picked up a few comic compliations and instruction books by Will Eisner, and I'm working on basic stuff, like gesture, at which Eisner rocked socks.

9: Playing Around

I've had more time to experiment with little things lately.

Firstly, a few more icon commissions from Internet-land.

My dog slept for a few minutes!

I hope to do more with designs like this in the future; these were far too fun! India ink and nib linework, colored in Corel Painter.

Go right ahead and ignore those hands and arms, I won't blame ya. This was drawn in Paint Tool SAI, which is an interesting program that seems like a Painter/Photoshop baby. I'll probably stick to both of the other programs, but it's always refreshing to try something like this. Pictured is an Insuti (a human-like race of mine) hoisting a flag. My superior illustration skills give all sorts of reasons why. :]

A tiny experiment which turned out quite nicely for having no direction. I'll have to try this type of thing again...the look is very inspired by old illustrators such as Artuš Scheiner and Edmund Dulac.

3: Graphite Fun

Some studies from my life drawing sessions and a homework assignment from the same class. I'm not sure of Blogger's policy on nudity, so I kept the posted studies rather tasteful.

The self portrait homework assignment. The requirement was to be wearing a hat which I have absolutely no problem with! 10x12" on drawing paper.
